Video game timeline

1958: Physicist Willy Higinbotham invented the first ever video game it was a table tennis like game played on an oscilloscope.

1967: Baer and team created two interactive TV games, a chase game and a tennis game. They were also able to manipulate a toy gun so that it detects spots of light on the TV screen.

 

1972:  magnavox’s odyssey was the first ever home video game system.

 

 

1975: Atari’s pong is released, which sold over 150,000 units.  

1976:  Coleco releases its first ever video game console 

called the Telstar

1977: Atari releases its first cartridge based home video system called the Video Computer 

 System which later becomes known as the Atari 2600. It retails for $249.95.

 

 

1985: In 1985 the very popular game Tetris was developed by a Russian programmer, it was played on PC and is still played even now over 23 years ago.

 

 

1989: Nintendo releases the first handheld Gameboy, it retailed for $109. The Gameboy was one of the most played handheld games ever. 

 

1995: Sony releases the playstation in the USA and sells it for $299. The playstation was the first innovation of consoles and was a big leap forward in gaming.

 

2000: Sony releases its PlayStation 2 which sells out by early morning on the day of its release. The playstation 2 was also a big leap forward in gaming compared to the playstion as it was more powerful and had better graphics which meant they was more capable of creating bigger games which made consoles even more popular.

The sims was also released in the year 2000 and was very popular as it was very unique

2001­­­­­­­: Xbox released their first ever console the xbox which was released into a market with a few competitors including the playstation and the game cube, but it stood out from them as it had games like halo that were exclusively made for the xbox.

 

2004: Nintendo released a new handheld game console called the Nintendo DS which hand two screens including a touch screen. This innovative design made the Nintendo ds unique and different from any other handheld game console.

2005: Playstation released their playstaion portable or PSP which had a large high resolution screen which made it stand out from the Nintendo ds as it gad a higher resolution screen and it was also very robust.

Xbox also released their second console called the xbox 360. They took a huge leap forward from their previous console in terms of graphics and its power. the xbox 360 is one of the most popular game consoles and is still played by most gamers today as it is one of the best on the market as long as the playstation 3. One of the biggest features on the xbox 360 is its xbox live which enables players to play against and speak to each other online. This new feature was the biggest selling point of the xbox 360 and brought a whole new competitive level to gaming.

 

2006:  Nintendo releases a new console called the intend wii which is console that uses a hand held controller that enabled the player to play games in a new way by doing actions related to the game to play it. For example swinging the controller in tennis to swing the racket. This unique way of playing games made the Nintendo wii stand out from the other consoles.

The playstation 3 was also released just 8 days apart from the release of the Nintendo wii. The playstation 3 is another console competing to be the best console on the market. As well as the xbox the playstation also has an online feature enabling you to play online against other players, but what makes the playstations online different to the xbox is that it is free but with the xbox you have to pay for the online feature. This is the main advantage that the playstation has over the xbox.

 

2008: Rockstar released their latest edition of their grand theft auto franchise called GTA IV. GTA IV broke sales records as it sold over 6 million copies worldwide in just its first week of being released. It is considered as one of the best games of all time as when it came out it had outstanding graphics and game play which stood out from any other game around at that time.

 

2011: Skyrim was released which is the fith edition of the very popular elder scrolls series following oblivion. When it was brought out it brought a whole new level to open world games as the player is surrounded by beautiful scenery. When it was brought out it sold over 7 million copies int he first week and it also won several awards such as pc game of the year and also overall game of the year.

 

2013: Rockstar brought out their newest edition of their GTA franchise GTA V which they earned over 800 million dollars of the first day of the release and over a billion in three days, which makes it the fasted selling entertainment product ever. It was one of the most anticipated games over the year and when it came out it made everyone’s expectations as the graphics and the level of detail is outstanding. GTA V sets a new standard for games as the graphics and the gameplay in the game are at a whole new level.
